a rare but grand visit to the St. Vincent Asylum for the Insane (in the Soulard
area of St. Louis). He comes to see his former protégé - Bishop James Duggan –
the fourth Catholic Bishop of Chicago<i>. </i>After ten unhappy years in Chicago, Bishop Duggan was returned to St. Louis in 1869 and has been committed to the asylum "for the hopelessly insane" for
